You Should Feel Safe in Your Community
School Safety
for Students & Families
With 17 school districts across our city, we owe it to our children, their families, and our community to rise above differences and work together to ensure the safety and well-being of every student. Schools must be a safe space for all students and their families. The promise of safety knows no boundaries—every child and family deserves to feel secure and supported.
City government has a crucial role to play as a convener, bringing together school districts, public safety experts, and community partners to develop unified solutions.
Here are our key action points:
1. School Vulnerability Assessments
Collaborate with all 17 school districts to conduct comprehensive security assessments, identifying risks and gaps unique to each campus.
Ensure every school develops and maintains actionable Emergency Operations Plans (EOPs) to safeguard students, staff, and visitors during emergencies.
2. School Infrastructure Safety
Prioritize safety enhancements around schools by:
- Improving lighting and sidewalks to create safe paths to and from schools.
- Updating zoning regulations to address traffic congestion and ensure safe pick-up and drop-off zones.
- Investing in infrastructure projects that close gaps, such as crosswalks, bike lanes, and traffic calming measures.
Support the citywide implementation of the Stop the Bleed program, ensuring every school is equipped with life-saving bleeding control kits and trained staff to respond to emergencies swiftly. The city must support oversight and confirm implementation of annual training and adequate resources.
3. Life-Saving Resources:
Stop the Bleed
4. Schools as Safe Spaces
for All
Ensure that schools remain safe spaces for every student and family, regardless of documentation status. This includes:
- Promoting policies that protect immigrant and undocumented families from fear of reprisal or discrimination.
- Providing resources and training for staff to support students and families in sensitive situations.
- Partnering with schools to foster inclusivity and ensure access to services without barriers.
5. Strengthened School Partnerships
Work hand-in-hand with school districts to:
- Implement citywide anti-bullying campaigns that promote kindness and inclusivity.
- Increase on-site access to mental health resources for students, offering support where it’s needed most.
- Provide tailored security enhancements based on the unique needs of each school, such as cameras, access controls, or safety drills.
Join the movement for safer schools: protecting every child, together.
By uniting our efforts, we can ensure schools are safe spaces for learning, growth, and community. This platform underscores that safety is a shared responsibility and a right for all children, no matter their background or circumstances.
